The command pulse is worth checking using a lab scope. The majority of vehicles use a 5-volt pulse; however, a few use full charging voltage. If a coil is unplugged, thereby eliminating electrical load, the signal will be full value, typically 5 volts. However, on a connected and loaded circuit, the voltage is. Not only is the secondary scope hookup in 'coil-on-plug application in most cases time consuming, but the inconsistency of a capacitive pickup in the proximity of a coil winding on each coil, can be deceiving. In addition, if there is no spark jumping a gap, there is no secondary pattern to diagnose the cause. There is no current in the coil's primary circuit until the dwell period, which is when the coil is earthed and the measured voltage drops to zero. The dwell period is controlled by the ignition amplifier, and the length of the dwell is determined by the time it takes to. A better, safer way is to attach a spark plug simulator to the coil secondary lead or to an individual plug lead. Just clamp the simulator to a good ground and attach the coil wire or plug lead to its terminal. If you're troubleshooting DIS, install the simulator on one or more coils. Dwell lab scope coil.
